Traffic Alert: Lane Closures Start Tuesday on Isabel Holmes Bridge
The N.C. Department of Transportation will intermittently close the westbound lanes of the Isabel S. Holmes Bridge on U.S. 74 over the Northeast Cape Fear River in Wilmington next week. The closure, starting at 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, and ending at 5 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, is needed so crews can repair the metal deck on the drawbridge section of the structure.
Portions of the grid deck occasionally break from wear and fatigue, while some of the welds can break from expansion and contraction caused by changes in weather. NCDOT crews will repair the damaged areas and inspect the remainder of the deck for metal fatigue and minor cracks and make repairs as needed.
Although there will not be any detours, drivers are still urged to seek alternate routes. Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect possible delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
