June 19 Update on GenX and Brunswick County

BOLIVIA, N.C.  (June 19, 2017) — As the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) prepares to start water sampling at twelve locations along the Cape Fear River this week, Brunswick County Public Health officials continue to discuss the potential health effects of GenX with state health officials.

Up to this point, the health screening level (the level below which health effects are not expected) has been based upon a study conducted in 2013-2014. The new samples will provide much needed information on the current levels of GenX at key points along the Cape Fear River, including the intake from which Brunswick County receives its raw water.

DEQ is acquiring specialized testing equipment and will be taking specific steps to ensure that the samples are not contaminated, and that conditions are maintained to ensure accurate, valid test results. Since river levels and discharges can vary, taking samples in a consistent manner and at the same time of day will help ensure consistency in results.

“We are highly supportive of DEQ’s efforts to determine current levels of GenX in the Cape Fear River,” said Cris Harrelson, Brunswick County Health Director. “New sampling data, along with the latest guidance from our state and federal health officials, will provide us with a more accurate picture of the health risks associated with GenX.”
