Lane Closure on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Tonight
[July 22, 2015] — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close the left lane in both directions on the U.S. 421 Cape Fear Memorial Bridge over the Cape Fear River in Wilmington tonight. The closure will begin at 9 p.m. and will end at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow. By closing the left lane in each direction, NCDOT Bridge Maintenance Crews will be able to repair the center rail on the bridge that was damaged in a crash several days ago. One lane will remain open to traffic at all times.
The center rail is a crucial safety feature on the bridge. It separates eastbound and westbound traffic and reduces the likelihood of a head-on collision.
Although the bridge will not be closed to traffic and one lane will be open in both directions at all times, motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
