Starting Monday, Aug. 10, and ending Thursday, Aug. 20, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the right lane in both directions on the U.S. 17/421 Thomas Rhodes Bridge over the Northeast Cape Fear River in Wilmington. The closure will take place from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day and will allow crews to repair damaged concrete on the bridge. One lane will remain open at all times. Motorists will see a new flashing signal at the intersection of N.C.133 and Blackwell Road in Belville starting Tuesday, Aug. 4 as the N.C. Department of Transportation prepares to fully activate the new traffic signal the following week, weather permitting. The new signal is expected to improve safety by controlling traffic at the N.C.133 and Blackwell Road intersection. Currently traffic on Blackwell Road has to stop, while traffic on N.C. 133 continues through the intersection.…

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act (H.R. 427) by a vote of 243 to 165.  I have said on many occasions that Congress needs to rein in the power of unelected federal bureaucrats to implement regulations that are not subject to approval by elected officials who are accountable to the voters.  This appears to be a step in the right direction.  Congressman David…

Department of Transportation’s ferry terminals in Southport and Fort Fisher are the newest facilities to be certified as North Carolina Clean Marinas, a designation given to marinas that exceed minimum environmental regulatory requirements. The Clean Marina program illustrates how marina operators can help safeguard the environment by using management and operation techniques that exceed environmental requirements.
