Williams represents Brunswick County at National Association of Counties conference in Washington
TO: Brunswick County Board of Commissioners
RE: Update on NaCo Legislative Conference
I recently represented Brunswick County at the National Association of Counties (NaCo) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.
Prior to the conference the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners adopted resolutions stating our position on a number of federal issues that impact counties. Issues covered in our resolutions include:
- Adverse impacts of the Affordable Care Act on our county employees’ healthcare coverage;
- Adverse impacts of the Biggert-Waters Act on the economy in coastal states and counties;
- The importance of dredging and inlet maintenance on public safety, transportation and coastal economies; and
- The importance of beach renourishment to coastal economies.
Additionally, the N.C. Association of County Commissioners has adopted a set of federal legislative goals.
My focus during the NaCo conference was securing face-time with Members of Congress and key staffers to share these resolutions and discuss the issues facing counties. Photos from the visit are below. I was able to secure meetings with:
- Congressman David Rouzer and his Chief of Staff
- Senator Thom Tillis and several members of his staff
- Senator Richard Burr
- S. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA)
- Congressman Walter Jones and his Chief of Staff and Legislative Director
- Congressman Mark Meadows
- Congresswoman Virginia Foxx
- Congressman Richard Hudson
- Al Lytton, Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.
In summary, I believe the opportunity to secure face-time with key Members of Congress was worthwhile. In particular, I believe it was valuable to discuss the importance of the coastal economy to North Carolina as a whole with Members who do not represent coastal districts.
Please let me know if you have questions or would like additional details.
Sincerely,
Frank Williams
Brunswick County Commissioner
