Board of Education reorganizes, honors two outgoing members

BOLIVIA, N.C. — The Brunswick County Board of Education honored two outgoing members Monday evening before incumbent Catherine Cooke and newcomers Ellen Milligan and Ed Lemon took the Oath of Office and officially began their duties.
Shirley Babson and Olaf “Bud” Thorsen, both longstanding members of the Board of Education, were presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Representative Frank Iler.  In addition to envelopes bursting with thank-you letters from the schools, plaques, and signed photographs, both Babson and Thorsen were presented videos of students at Town Creek Elementary and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary planting trees in their honor.
Once seated, the new board’s first item of business was to reorganize by electing a chairman and vice-chairman.  This process is done annually at the December meeting. Congratulations to Chairman Ed Lemon and Vice-Chairman John Thompson.
