Rural Transportation Planning Group appoints David Ballengee to represent Waccamaw area as Community Liaison

[June 22, 2026] – At the suggestion of Brunswick County Commissioner Frank Williams, the Cape Fear Rural Planning Organization’s Transportation Organization’s Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC) recently created new Community Liaison positions to provide increased opportunities for community engagement. The RTAC unanimously voted to create the positions at its April 10, 2026 meeting.

On June 19, RTAC members unanimously appointed the second non-municipal Community Liaison, selecting David Ballengee to represent the Ash and Waccamaw communities. Ballengee is a lifelong resident of Brunswick County and graduate of West Brunswick High School. He spent 30 years in the logging and timber industry. Additionally, he spent nearly 16 years as a volunteer with the Waccamaw Fire Department.

On April 10, RTAC members appointed Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department Chief Travis Mercer to represent the Winnabow/Town Creek area.

Additionally, the RTAC received an inquiry from a resident of the Supply area who was interested in serving as a community liaison. As the inquiry was researched, it was discovered that the resident resides in the Grand Strand Area Transportation Study (GSATS) planning area, not the RTAC planning jurisdiction.
