Comments on the Compass Pointe Intersection

As you may know, there has been much discussion about potential changes and improvements at the entrance to Compass Pointe on Highway 74/76 in the wake of the tragic accident which claimed the life of Lindsey Benton. For more information, click here for an article that appeared in the Star-News.

I have received numerous emails about the intersection, mostly from residents of Compass Pointe. While counties in North Carolina are not involved in building or maintaining roads (this is different from many other states), I have forwarded (or will forward) each and every email received to the appropriate personnel at the N.C. Department of Transportation, the N.C. Highway Patrol and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. I have also personally spoken with the NCDOT Division Engineer and the appropriate person with the Highway Patrol about this issue.

Many of those who have contacted me have suggested a stoplight as the potential solution. While a stoplight will likely be among the solutions NCDOT considers, it may not ultimately be the answer. I believe a superstreet U-turn similar to the ones in the Waterford / Magnolia Greens area on US 17 is a more likely solution.

I will continue to monitor this issue and will stay in contact with NCDOT about it.
